Memorial Day Ceremony
The Dennis J. Becker American Legion Post 205 conducted its fourth Memorial Day Ceremony on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, 2019. Befitting the occasion, it was a solemn event, not a celebratory event like a parade. It was held in the open area outside the Bluffton Police Department Headquarters on Buckwalter Parkway. The center of focus was the flagpole where the American Flag was raised from half-staff to full-staff at noon.
In accordance with United States Code Title 4, Chapter 1, the flag, when flown at half staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. On Memorial Day the flag should be displayed at half staff until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff. The ceremony started at 11:30 AM and culminated at noon with the flag ceremony.
