Memorial Day Ceremony
May 29, 2023
The American Legion Post 205 Memorial Day Celebration at the Veterans Memorial in Bluffton was a memorable occasion. There was a large crowd that consisted of local veterans, Post 205 Members and families. The Post 205 Auxiliary was in full force giving away Poppies, a symbol of remembrance. The guest speakers gave heart felt speeches and a stirring rendition of the National Anthem was given by Katie McAllister. I was honored to be the Master of Ceremony at this event. My thanks to all those who helped make this event a success.

The Dennis J. Becker American Legion Post 205 conducted its Memorial Day Ceremony on Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, 2023. Befitting the occasion, it was a solemn event, not a celebratory event like a parade. It was held in the open area outside near the Bluffton Police Department Headquarters at the Veterans Memorial Park on Buckwalter Parkway. The center of focus was the flagpole where the American Flag was raised from half-staff to full-staff at noon.
In accordance with United States Code Title 4, Chapter 1, the flag, when flown at half staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. On Memorial Day the flag should be displayed at half staff until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff. The ceremony started at 11:30 AM and culminated at noon with the flag ceremony.
